Community Gynaecology

Gynaecology is the medical speciality dealing with health of the female reproductive system. Whereas previously investigations and treatments had to be carried out in hospital now many of those can be done in a community setting. In Hull and East Yorkshire, GP’s initiate investigations and refer on to a specialist service as necessary. These are based within the hospital (Women and Children’s Hospital based at Hull Royal Infirmary or the Women’s Unit based at Castle Hill Hospital) or through community gynaecology based at Conifer.

Women can also directly access information and some investigative treatment through the community gynaecology service. These include management of menopause, pms, period problems, pelvic pain and some urinary problems to name a few.

Further information on specific medical conditions

This section is for women and others interested in their health and care. All information comes from up to date and carefully checked guidance from healthcare professionals some of which is written specifically for the public, others not necessarily so but written in a way that is not too difficult to understand. There is much on the internet on health topics but not all is reputable or based on good scientific evidence.

Two websites which cover many health conditions are NHS Choices and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

The Community Gynaecology Service Offers:

Advice, treatment, and support on gynaecological problems/issues, contraceptive advice, arrangement for female sterilisation, termination of pregnancy advice and arrangements.

In the last 6 months alone, 227 people (19% of our appointments) failed to attend.  Missed appointments create a waiting list and cost the service thousands of pounds a year - this money could be used to invest in and develop our services for the population of Hull and the East Riding.
